June 12, 1918
Dear Ones at home:
It has been about a week since I have written to you. I have been expecting a letter from you, but have been in a place, where I could not get it. I have been on the move for some time, and expect to be for quite a while. I just left a place where the bullets were flying all around me. I was a little excited at first, but now I can sleep and let them go by. I was up on the front line for a time and I heard a few bullets that came close, but all I did was to lay down and think "My but that was close." I don't know where I will go from here. I may rest awhile and I may go to some other part of the port. It is fun to see the air planes when they chase one another. We don't stand and watch them fly over like we did at Maywook fair last fall. They sure have some flyers here.

Will hasn't heard from his folks yet, that is, none only those letters that went to Virginia.
Well I suppose you are all busy out there and having a good time. I have been up three night, but I get to sleep in the day time. I don't sleep as good in the day as I do at night. I suppose I will soon get used to it. Well I hope these few lines will reach you as it leaves me, and everything will be O. K. I will close with love.
Your son,
M. H. Colling.

LISTED WITH THE HEROES:
----------------
One of the first of Red Willow county's sons to be listed among the growing list of heroes who have made the supreme sacrifice for their country is Matt Colling, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Colling of Indianola.
Several weeks ago Mr. Colling received word that his son had been severely wounded on July 27 and since that time has failed to hear anything further, despite constant inquiries made of the authorities at Washington. On Saturday last Mr. Colling received a telegram stating briefly that his son had died on July 28 as a result of wounds received. Although this information is but meager we feel sure that if the whole truth were full known the story of Matt Colling's death would be a cause of pride not only to the immediate family but to the entire community as well.
The Gazette joins the many friends of the Colling family in extending the deepest sympathy at this time of bereavement.

A Memorial Service.
------------
On Saturday, November 9th a memorial service was held at the Sacred Heart Church in honor of Private Matthias H. Colling, who died in France on July 28th from wounds received in battle the day previous. The Requiem Mass was chanted by the young men's choir of which Matt was a faithful member until his entry into the army. The church was decorated with flags, red white and blue bunting, and the casket, draped in black, under the shadow of the flag.
While mourning the loss of a member, the congregation is honored by the fact that one of its boys was the first in the county to die the death of a hero. In the short discourse by the pastor the text: "Render therefore unto Caesar's the things that are Caesar's and unto God the things that are God's" (Matt. XXII 21) was used. Before and after the service the following selections were rendered on the Victrola: "America" by Clarence Whitehill "Star Spangled Banner" by John McCormack and male chorus "Rock of Ages" by Huck and Homer, and Jesus Saviour of My Soul" a trio for first and second tenor and baritone by members of the choir.

In Memory of M.H. Colling.
In manhood's golden years he sailed away,
For him the future seemed both bright and gay,
When storm clouds hovered o'er our Peaceful land
For God and Country Mat did lend a hand.
So, proudly with our noblest sons he went
To fight, if need be, till his life was spent;
Upon the field of battle lo! he fell
Thus does the golden star his story to tell.
